WHAT IS A PROLACTIN LAB TEST FOR? Prolactin is a hormone that is released from the pituitary gland into the blood stream. Its function is to stimulate breast development and milk production in women. The levels of prolactin are in very small amounts in men. Normal individuals’ prolactin levels vary in a 24 hour period; the levels usually rise during sleep and peak in the morning. Women that are pregnant and breastfeeding typically have a high prolactin level as a normal physiologic response.
